Weight & BMI Tracking
Monitor body weight and body mass index for cardiovascular health
What are Weight and BMI?
- Body Weight - Your total body mass in kilograms (kg) or pounds (lbs)
- BMI (Body Mass Index) - Weight-to-height ratio calculated as weight (kg) / height² (m²)
Example: A person weighing 70 kg at 1.75 m tall has a BMI of 70 / (1.75²) = 22.9 kg/m²
Why Weight and BMI Matter for Cardiovascular Health
- Excess weight increases cardiovascular disease risk
- Associated with hypertension, diabetes, and dyslipidemia
- Weight loss can improve blood pressure and metabolic health
- Rapid weight changes may indicate fluid retention or other health issues
📊 BMI limitations: BMI doesn't distinguish muscle from fat. Athletes and muscular individuals may have "high" BMI despite being healthy. Discuss your target range with your clinician.
BMI Categories (CDC)
Underweight
<18.5 kg/m²
May indicate malnutrition or underlying health conditions.
Healthy Weight
18.5 - 24.9 kg/m²
Associated with lower cardiovascular disease risk.
Overweight
25.0 - 29.9 kg/m²
Increased health risks. Lifestyle modifications recommended.
Obesity
≥30.0 kg/m²
Significantly increased cardiovascular risk. Medical evaluation recommended.
⚠️ Context matters: BMI is a screening tool, not a diagnostic. Age, sex, muscle mass, and ethnicity affect interpretation. Consult your clinician for personalized targets.
How Cardio Analytics Uses Weight and BMI Data
- Tracks weight trends - Visualize changes over days, weeks, and months
- Computes BMI automatically - Using height from HealthKit and current weight
- Highlights clinically relevant changes - Alerts for rapid weight gain/loss
- Medication correlations - See how medications (e.g., diuretics, beta blockers) affect weight
- Blood pressure correlations - Track relationship between weight and BP
- Write-back to HealthKit - Manual weight entries sync to Apple Health
HealthKit Data Types
Cardio Analytics reads weight data from Apple HealthKit using this identifier:
bodyMass- Weight in kilograms (kg) (Apple Docs)height- Height in meters (m), used to calculate BMI
Tips for Accurate Weight Tracking
- Weigh at the same time daily - Morning after using the bathroom, before eating
- Use the same scale - Different scales can vary by 1-2 kg
- Minimal clothing - Weigh without shoes for consistency
- Track trends, not daily fluctuations - Weight varies 0.5-2 kg day-to-day due to water, food, etc.
- Use a validated scale - Smart scales that sync to HealthKit automate tracking
